Hire Me

What is a Devil's Advocate?

The idiom devil's advocate refers to a person who argues against the popular opinion of a group to foster discussion. This person doesn't have to believe in what they are arguing; rather, they will argue for the purpose of presenting a new point of view.

The term was first used in the 1500s, when the church would appoint someone to argue against a canonization candidate. The "advocatus diaboli," or devil's advocate, would try to find holes in stories about a candidate's character and their supposed miracles. This would allow the church to have a well-rounded view of the candidate during the decision-making process.

While originally a specific, formal position (Advocatus Diaboli) created by the Catholic Church in 1587, it is now primarily used in professional settings as a critical analytical role, similar to that of a consultant, analyst, or reviewer.

"Devil's advocate" is a noun used to describe a contrary position someone is taking. As an idiom, "devil's advocate" doesn't literally refer to someone who is advocating for the devil, but someone who is arguing against a popular notion. You use "devil's advocate" when describing someone who is picking holes in an argument or bringing up a train of thought that directly conflicts with common opinion.

You see, politicians hire people to silence critics. Religious leaders leverage power and connections to bury criticism. And most of you? You fight anyone who dares to point out what needs to improve in your life.

That is not strength. That is ego in chains.

It is the easiest way to identify a person, or even a group, that would rather protect a comforting lie than confront a necessary truth.

Yes, criticism is uncomfortable. It bruises the ego! It exposes flaws we would rather hide!! But it is also the doorway to growth....!!!

Nothing improves until something is admitted to be wrong. And many people would rather defend what is wrong than become what is better.

This is why most governments and religions are in shambles. They prefer sycophants to those who point out their mistakes.

Why won't you hire me — who operates in duality?

I have long realized that anyone who is ahead in anything does something extra. It is not chance. Chance may push you up, but it takes working extra hard to stay up.

If you don't have someone who criticizes your life, career, or business, then you have a dangerous gap. Others get angry when they are criticized — I hired a professional to hit us harder so that we can do better.

How to Use "Devil's Advocate"

1

Hire me or submit a plan!

A devil's advocate is someone who, given a position or plan, deliberately argues against it, even if they agree with it, to uncover weaknesses and prevent groupthink.

2

Methodology

With the above, I will help refine arguments, identify risks, and improve decision-making as I do for business, religious and political settings. Actively finding flaws in data, questioning assumptions, and playing "devil's advocate" to test decisions.

3

Delivery

A delivery that helps challenge consensus, explore alternative viewpoints, and ensure all sides of a debate are considered. This prevents "groupthink," encourages critical thinking, and mitigates risks before costly mistakes occur.

Key Skills for the Role

Critical Thinking

Analyzing information from a skeptical viewpoint.

Objectivity

Focusing on arguments rather than personal emotions.

Communication

Presenting counterarguments constructively, not just being difficult.

A Testimony to Why You Should Have a Devil's Advocate

As a Media Company with a Podcast, we hired someone whose job is to find fault in every video we make, every question we ask, every movement of lips during interviews, every graphic, every thumbnail, everything about every video.

His job is to find faults even in places where ordinary eyes may not see any.

He started by pointing out the "hmm hmm" sound, which I (the host) used in an attempt to encourage guests to keep speaking. He struggled with it until I finally stopped.

He would watch interviews we thought we performed so well in and say, "If I were someone else, I wouldn't watch this for a second. You performed poorly."

He would review videos I believed the editors handled excellently and insist that we couldn't post them until they reached a certain standard.

He would critique my choice of words during questions and say, "Sir, you spoke like an illiterate."

He doesn't just criticize our work — he has been empowered to do it in a very brutal and, at times, disrespectful way so that we get hit internally before the public hits us.

And I tell you the truth, that is the best decision I have ever made for the podcast. With that "devil" on our team, we are forced to tighten every loose end and ensure we are as close to spotless as possible.

And the results are evident in our recent videos. With every new one, we make improvements. We align our words better, ask more provocative questions in a way that doesn't come off as offensive to our guests, while also serving our audience the needed vigor and brutal honesty that the brand is known for, and edit our videos more creatively.
